Herbalism is the practice of using medicinal plants for wellness. This is a holistic approach to health and wellness that dates back thousands of years, with roots in traditional healing systems from around the world.

Herbal remedies can be used to support the body's natural healing processes, strengthen the immune system, and address underlying imbalances that may contribute to illness. These remedies can be particularly beneficial for chronic conditions, as they often have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical drugs. When used in conjunction with Western medicine, herbalism can enhance the effectiveness of treatment and help manage side effects.

Overall, herbalism offers a natural and gentle approach to health & wellness that can be used alongside modern medicine to support and enhance the body's ability to heal itself.

Charley Caudill, Folk Herbalist

I am an herbalist, trained in Southern Folk Medicine & Western Herbalism, having studied in-person for three years with Phyllis Light at the Appalachian Center for Natural Health in Alabama. I have also studied for several years with Sajah Popham of Evolutionary Herbalism and taken many trainings with the best herbalists in the country.

As an herbalist, I work with medicinal plants (mostly native) to help people find balance in their bodies. I work with all sorts of people & conditions, but chronic ailments & women's health are my passion. I love playing herbal matchmaker to find the perfect remedy to balance your unique energy.

During my wellness consultations, I work to find the root cause of your ailment rather than putting a bandaid on the symptoms. With herbal remedies, the goal is to bring your body back to a healthy state so that you can enjoy a better quality of life.

I also work in Astro-Herbalism, which means that I can look into your birth chart and pair herbs to bring harmony to planetary aspects that may be creating imbalance in your physical, energetic, or spiritual bodies.

Conditions I've assisted with:

Anxiety & Melancholy

Insomnia

Infertility & PCOS

Autoimmune Disorders

Kidney & Gallbladder disfunctions

and lots more!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Southern Folk Medicine?

Southern Folk Medicine is the medicine of the people. It was formed in the Southern United States as Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans combined their knowledge of plant medicines. This practice looks at every person as the unique individual they are. Herbal remedies and nutrition are tailored to a person’s body constitution and temperament.

The really magical thing about folk medicine is that we can use the plants that grow all over Kentucky as a catalyst for healing. Unlike pharmaceuticals, which are aimed at forcing a change in the symptoms of disease, herbal remedies work to turn on your body’s ability to correct imbalance in the tissues and come back to harmony. While this idea of balancing body constitutions is somewhat similar to Chinese Medicine or Ayurvedic Medicine, the main difference is that we use herbs native to the US, rather than shipping them from overseas. This means that your plant allies could be growing in your own backyard!

What does the herbalist consultation look like?

During our initial consultation, we will discuss your health history and wellness goals. We’ll talk for about an hour to 90 minutes.

After the herbalist consultation, you will receive:

  • Customized Wellness Plan
  • Herbal Remedies
  • Dietary Recommendations
  • Lifestyle Recommendations
  • Follow-up Appointment

Your follow-up appointment (included in the cost) will be scheduled for a week or so after your initial consultation. During the follow-up we will discuss your wellness plan and recommended herbal remedies.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you!

What is an herbal remedy? How do I take it?

Remedies come in different forms. Herbal tinctures are herbs extracted in alcohol. These are taken in a bit of water. There are also herbal teas. Salves are used topically. Cost of herbs is additional to the cost of your consultation. I may have the recommended herbs available at White Willow, or I may recommend you purchase them elsewhere.

What is the cost?

The initial consultation, including one 90-minute appointment, one 30 minute appointment, and your wellness plan, costs $155.

The fee for follow-up consultations is $55. Mini-consultations for mini issues are $45.

Sliding scale is available, so please contact us if you need an adjusted fee by emailing: whitewillowlex@gmail.com.

What conditions can be treated?

When working with plant medicine, we don’t talk in terms of curing illness. Instead, we are addressing imbalances in the tissues and providing the body with what it needs to heal. Any condition can be aided with herbs.

Conditions I've Helped With:

  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Fertility
  • Chronic Ailments
  • Autoimmune Conditions
  • Insomnia
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Melancholy
  • & more!

I do not offer consultations for emergency situations or acute conditions. If I feel you would be better served by another practitioner, I will help you find one.

What if I’m already taking pharmaceutical medications?

The herbalism I practice is integrative. There is certainly a time and place for modern medicine, and I’m so thankful for it. I will never recommend that you stop taking any medication. If you are working with your health practitioner to ween off of a medication, I can help with that. Some herbs cannot be combined with pharmaceuticals, but many more herbs can be used in conjunction with medications. We can make it work!

What if I’m not sick but want to increase longevity?

I am here for that! My hope is that all my clients will reach a point where symptoms are kept at bay and they can focus on living longer, healthier lives. We can talk about  nutrition, tonic herbs, & supplements for health maintenance.

Can you help me lose weight?

Rather than focusing on the numbers on a scale, I like to look to other indicators of good health. I want to help you with energy levels, improve your mood and joie de vivre, help you feel better and safer in your body. Herbal remedies are initiators to your self healing. Weight loss can be a result of feeling better and restoring balance in the organ systems. There are no herbal magic pills for weight loss.
